Jasmine Gill

I am a practicing midwife registered with the College of Midwives of British Columbia, who is passionate about growing the midwifery profession in BC through education. I believe my experience as a Registered Midwife, Registered Nurse, and a person of colour, who recently graduated from UBC’s Midwifery Program, is an asset for this position.

My interest in providing mentorship for BIPoC midwifery students stems from being a person of colour myself, with recent experience through UBC’s Midwifery Program. The midwifery community in British Columbia is small, and BIPoC midwives make up an even smaller percentage of this community. Through my midwifery education, and to this day, I am constantly educating people in my community about what a midwife is and what our scope entails; this has made me further realize the lack of representation of midwives in marginalized and minority populations. By providing student mentorship as a Clinical Faculty member at UBC, my goal is to provide representation and empathetic education to upcoming midwives. I hope this will empower future BIPoC midwives and, through culturally sensitive mentorship, provide them a perspective that is similar to their own.

I have a strong educational, occupational, and volunteer background in perinatal health. In addition to being a Registered Midwife, I have worked as a Registered Nurse at both BC Women’s Hospital and South Community Birth Program over the last 6 years and I am a certified Lactation Consultant. I have worked with marginalized populations through multiple volunteer positions, including providing prenatal classes and doula services to women at Fir Square at BC Women’s Hospital and working at Fraser Health’s Crisis Line.

I currently work as a full-time midwife at Grove Midwifery Care in a group model, which provides me with availability in my week to provide mentorship to students seeking support. I look forward to working with students in UBC’s Midwifery Program!
